Damping Effect

Eddy currents can cause 'damping effect'. When induced current starts flowing in small circles it is called eddy current. This current flow is similar looking to eddies in water hence it was named eddy current.

Damping Effect can be properly defined as that effect caused purposely or naturally to a system that tries to minimize the amplitude of oscillations of an oscillatory system. Damping can also be said as "force synchronous with the velocity of the object" but reverse in direction to it. The Simplest example of damping is a oscillating

"Simple Pendulum" as shown in above figure.

F may be related to the velocity v by

where C is the viscous damping coefficient, in units of newton-seconds per meter
